1. About the Department

The Department of Mechatronics Engineering is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature. It continuously advances integrated research in mechanical testing theory and technology, electromagnetic compatibility and mechanical engineering, acoustic metamaterials and mechanical structures, as well as solar energy technology and mechatronics. Through interdisciplinary research and applications, the department aims to drive innovation and development in mechatronic technology. It strives to cultivate leading talents for industries including machinery and equipment manufacturing, electronic engineering, and information industry, who will work in communications products, unmanned aerial vehicles, new energy vehicles, aviation manufacturing, automation, robotics, micro and precision instruments, and other related fields.

The department currently has 20 full-time faculty members, including 10 professors and 9 associate professors. Its academic team includes Professor Peter, a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Xia Zhijie, a national-level talent, and national-level young talents Zhu Yifan and Professor Fan Haiyan. It also has 1 ministerial-level high-level scientific and technological innovation talent, 2 Jiangsu Provincial “Six Talent Peaks” talents, 2 backbone teachers of Jiangsu Provincial “Qinglan Project”, and 1 Jiangsu Provincial “Shuangchuang” Doctor. The department houses several research teams, such as the Research Center for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects, the Research Center for Equipment Intelligent Technology, and the Laboratory of Micro-Nano Acoustic Devices and Optical Detection.

Faculty members teach a variety of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral courses. Among them,Mechatronic Control Technology is a National Excellent Course, a National Excellent Resource Sharing Course, and a National First-Class Undergraduate Online Course. The department has developed a number of textbooks and monographs, includingMechatronic Control Technology,Electronic Precision Machinery Design,Structural Design Principles of Electronic Equipment, andPrinciples and Utilization of Solar Energy Technology. In recent years, many students supervised by the department have been awarded Excellent Undergraduate Theses and Excellent Master’s Theses. The department has also guided students to win numerous awards in competitions such as the Embedded System Design Contest and Mechanical Innovation Design Competition.

Supported by the ministerial-level platform “Discipline and Technology Center for Electromechanical Systems and Their Electromagnetic Environmental Effects” and the Jiangsu Provincial Professional Testing Center for Electromagnetic Compatibility, the department boasts profound historical heritage. The center originated from the first interdisciplinary undergraduate major—Structural Design of Electronic Equipment—established in 1965, and enjoys distinct traditional advantages in the field of electromagnetic compatibility.

By introducing high-level talents including Academician Peter, national-level young talents Zhu Yifan and Professor Fan Haiyan, the department takes engineering electromagnetic compatibility research as the entry point, conducting research on multi-physics coupling characteristics involving electromagnetism, thermology, mechanics and acoustics. It is committed to the research on testing technologies for electromagnetic properties of new materials and the development of strong electromagnetic protection test devices. Meanwhile, the department vigorously expands new disciplinary growth areas such as acoustic metamaterials, micro-acoustic electronic devices, and photoacoustic detection.

In the past five years, the Department of Mechatronic Engineering has responded to the major needs of the national economy, national strategic security, and people’s life and health. Focusing on electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic environmental effects, intelligent mechatronic equipment, and intelligent manufacturing, the department has undertaken more than 20 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key R&D Program, over 30 national defense projects, and nearly 100 enterprise-commissioned projects. Among them, 5 are national major special projects or national defense projects with a funding of over 2 million RMB. The average annual research funding exceeds 10 million RMB.

In the past five years, the department has published about 300 SCI papers, including those in top journals such as Nature sub-journals, Science sub-journals, and Physical Review Letters (PRL). More than 300 invention patents have been applied for or authorized. The department has also presided over the formulation of 15 national standards for electromagnetic compatibility.

2. Student Development

The department has established sound exchange and cooperative relations with world-renowned universities in the United States, New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and other countries, including the University of Michigan, the University of Arizona, the University of Auckland, and the National University of Singapore, with mutual student exchanges and study visits. It has also built industry-university-research cooperation with leading domestic enterprises such as Estun, Tongfu Microelectronics, and Nanjing High Speed & Accurate Gear. In recent years, the department has been awarded 4 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards.

Over the past five years, the Department of Mechatronic Engineering has graduated more than 30 doctoral students and over 150 master’s students, who mainly conduct cutting-edge research in electromagnetic compatibility, intelligent equipment and automation, robotics, medical and rehabilitation equipment, and other fields. More than 80% of graduates hold core R&D and management positions in high-tech enterprises in mechatronics, robotics, medical devices, automation, communications, IT and other industries. In addition, some graduates engage in scientific research and technology development in universities and national defense enterprises, or pursue further studies overseas.
