Department of Design Science is committed to innovative design, AI-enabled engineering, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our research advances original design concepts and enabling technologies across mechanical systems and equipment, precision medical devices, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. We focus on addressing critical challenges in major national engineering initiatives, spanning semiconductor manufacturing, high-speed rail, autonomous driving, human spaceflight, energy systems, and neuromorphic computing. Through these efforts, we develop fundamental theories, methodologies, and engineering solutions that support strategic emerging industries.

With a strong tradition of disciplinary development, the department is recognized for excellence in both education and research. The textbookMechanical Principles, compiled by Prof. Xikai Huang, is widely respected, and the department hosts a national-level teaching team in mechanical design. Our scientific research is led by Prof. Yunfei Chen and Prof. Lei Liu, who are nationally recognized as leading scholars. We have established the Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Design and Manufacturing of Precision Medical Equipment and the SEU-BSH R&D Center. In recent years, our faculty has undertaken the National Key R&D Program of China in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, additive manufacturing, energy-saving vibration reduction, and intelligent driving, as well as key programs funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2018, the team led by Prof. Yunfei Chen won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, with the department listed as the first-ranked completing institution. To date, our scholars have published over 100 papers in top academic journals, includingScience,Nature,Nature Nanotechnology,PRL,JACS, andPNAS. Multiple research outcomes have also been translated into industrial applications, generating significant social and economic impact.
